Terms of Service
Terms of service for the Avera application.
These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your use of Avera, including the desktop application for macOS, Windows, and Linux, the browser connector, command-line tools, and optional cloud, team, and subscription features. By installing or using Avera, you agree to these Terms.
1. The service
Avera is a research workspace for collecting papers, taking notes, running systematic review workflows, and drafting manuscripts. Features include a research library, notebook, screening tools, research writer, browser connector, command-line tools included with the desktop app, MCP integration for Cursor and Claude Desktop, and optional cloud collaboration.
Some features are in beta or planned; availability may change as we ship updates.
2. Eligibility and accounts
- You must be able to form a binding contract in your jurisdiction to use cloud and subscription features.
- You may use local features without an account.
- When you sign in (for example, with Google), you are responsible for activity under your account.
- You must provide accurate account information and keep credentials secure.
3. Subscriptions and billing
Paid features — including unlimited library size, cloud sync, teams, connections, and writer access — require an active subscription processed through Stripe. Free-tier limits apply when you are not subscribed.
Subscriptions renew according to the plan you select until you cancel through the Stripe Customer Portal. Fees are non-refundable except where required by law.
4. Your content
You retain ownership of research materials, notes, manuscripts, and other content you add to the application. You grant us a limited license to host, process, and sync content you choose to store in the cloud solely to operate the service.
You are responsible for ensuring you have the right to store, share, and use content you import — including PDFs, excerpts, and team-shared materials.
5. Acceptable use
- Do not use the service to violate laws or third-party rights.
- Do not attempt to reverse engineer, disrupt, or overload our systems.
- Do not use the browser connector or CLI to scrape sites in violation of their terms.
- Do not share account access or resell the service without permission.
- Do not upload malware or use the service to distribute harmful content.
6. Teams and collaboration
Team owners and members are responsible for content shared within a team. Do not share confidential or sensitive data with teammates unless you intend to. Use private notes when content should not sync to others.
7. Third-party services
The application integrates with third parties such as Google (sign-in), Stripe (billing), publishers and reference sites (via the connector), and MCP clients you connect (such as Cursor or Claude Desktop). Your use of those services is subject to their terms. We are not responsible for third-party services.
8. Beta and experimental features
Features marked beta, in progress, or coming soon may be incomplete or change without notice. They are provided as-is and may be limited or withdrawn.
9. Disclaimers
Avera is a productivity tool for academic and professional research. It does not provide medical, legal, financial, or other professional advice. Screening workflows, citations, and exports are aids — you remain responsible for the accuracy and integrity of your research outputs.
The service is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement, to the fullest extent permitted by law.
10. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for loss of data, profits, or research outcomes. Our total liability for any claim relating to the service is limited to the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim, or one hundred US dollars if you have not paid us, whichever is greater.
11. Termination
You may stop using the application at any time. We may suspend or terminate access if you materially breach these Terms or if required by law. Upon termination, your right to use cloud features ends; local data on your device remains under your control.
12. Changes
We may modify these Terms or the service. We will post updated Terms on this page. Material changes will be noted by updating the last updated date. Continued use after changes constitutes acceptance.
13. General
- These Terms are the entire agreement between you and us regarding the service.
- If a provision is unenforceable, the rest remains in effect.
- Our failure to enforce a provision is not a waiver.
- You may not assign these Terms without our consent; we may assign them in connection with a merger or sale.
14. Contact
Questions about these Terms can be sent to the contact address listed on our website or in the Avera application settings.
